India Gets its own Car Crash Test Programme Bharat NCAP

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has launched the Bharat New Car Assistance Program (BNCAP) on Tuesday and it will be applicable from 1 October, 2023 in India.
This is one of the historic step for the automobile sector, as it is the first and only car crash test program in the country.
It will help to give safety rating to the car available in the country.
With ‘BNCAP’, India has become the 5th country in the world to introduce its own crash test program after the US, China, Japan and South Korea.

What is Bharat NCAP crash test?

It is based on the concept of Global NCAP and Euro NCAP and has been named ‘Bharat NCAP‘.
Under this, companies which are making vehicles in India or importing vehicles from other countries will have to voluntarily get their vehicles crash tested.

Vehicles participating in the crash test under Bharat NCAP will be given a crash test rating between 0 to 5 based on various identified parameters such as structural safety, adult occupant protection, child occupant protection.

Over 30 models for Bharat NCAP crash test

Union minister Nitin Gadkari said, “Different Car makers have already offered over 30 car models for crash test under bharat NCAP safety ratings.”
He said that this program would motivate the companies to improve the manufacturing quality of the vehicles.
Let us tell you that all vehicles with a weight upto 3.5 tonnes will have to go through new Bharat NCAP norms. Testing and evaluation of CNG and electric vehicles will also be done under this program.

Pedestrian safety will be emphasized through Bharat NCAP

There will be more emphasis on enhancing the safety of pedestrians and other road users through the Bharat NCAP crash tests.
Apart from this, 6 airbags, seat belt reminder, manual ride etc. can be included in vehicles of every segment as additional safety features.
There are about 4.5 lakh accidents in the country every year, in which about 1.5 lakh people die. This causes a loss of 3.1 percent in the country’s GDP.
