Automobile company Volvo has unveiled its first ‘production-ready’ self-driving truck in partnership with the autonomous driving technology company named Aurora.
This autonomous driving truck is Based on the Volvo’s new VNL, which is a Class 8 semi-truck designed for long-haul transportation, it utilizes Aurora’s level 4 autonomous driving system, equipped with HD cameras, imaging radar, and a LiDAR sensor, enabling operation without a driver.
This autonomous semi-truck is equipped with essential systems for safety, including steering, braking, communication, computing, power management, energy storage, and vehicle motion management.
The companies have outfitted the truck with Aurora’s self-driving hardware and software stack. Aurora designed these systems, while Volvo will handle the manufacturing.
According to TechCrunch, this truck will start hauling freight in the U.S. in the coming months, with a human driver available to operate it if needed.
