What is a steering wheel?
The direction of any vehicle can be changed with the steering wheel. This helps the driver maintain control over the vehicle and enjoy the journey.
The steering wheel is connected to the shaft of the vehicle’s wheels and when the driver turns it left or right, the vehicle also turns in the same direction. To change direction, the steering wheel takes the help of column, thrust bearing and shaft rod.
Telescope steering wheel
Telescopic steering wheel is an adjustable steering wheel. The driver can pull such wheels towards himself or move them away as per requirement.
Let us tell you that with the help of the rod, this steering wheel can be adjusted back and forth up to 3 inches. This steering wheel works on the principle of telescope. Currently, this steering is used in Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Tata Nexon present in the country.
Tilt steering wheel
The tilt steering wheel was introduced by General Motors in 1963. These are commonly used in luxury vehicles. This is a steering wheel which you can adjust according to your height.
This wheel makes it possible for people of different sizes to drive the vehicle comfortably. There is an arch below the tilt steering wheel, which can be moved up and down to raise and lower the steering wheel.
Adjustable steering wheel
The adjustable steering wheel features both tilt and telescopic steering. That is, like a telescopic wheel, they can be moved forward and backward, whereas like a tilt, they can also be moved up and down.
It works with the help of an electric motor or compressor lock instead of steering column-wheel arch technology. This steering wheel is used in vehicles like Mahindra XUV700, Tata Harrier and Tata Safari available in the country.
Swing-away steering wheel
Ford first introduced the swing-away steering wheel in its luxury car Thunderbird in 1961. It was designed to allow the driver to easily get in and out of the vehicle.
This steering wheel could be moved up to 9 inches to the right during parking. At present this steering wheel is not used in any vehicle, but it was liked a lot by the customers in old vehicles.
Steering wheel with recirculating balls
Recirculating ball steering wheels were used in vehicles until the 80’s and 90’s. It is equipped with recirculating ball steering gear.
This gear is basically a screw on the shaft of your car’s front wheels, which connects your steering wheel to your car’s wheels. With this the car is rotated. Recirculating ball steering is still used in many trucks, SUVs, and off-road vehicles today.
Rack and Pinion steering wheel
Modern vehicles use rack and pinion steering wheel systems, which are enclosed in a type of metal tube with the rack ends protruding.
The steering wheel is connected to these racks with the help of a pinion.
The wheels of the vehicle are also connected to this rack and as the direction of the rack changes through the steering wheel, the direction of the vehicle also starts changing.
